Service Center Policy
To support researchers working beyond disciplinary and organizational boundaries, MIT has created a network of laboratories, centers, institutes, initiatives, programs, and collaborations. NRL staff also provide technical assistance for research projects for high school students, undergraduate and graduate students, university researchers and faculty members, and national laboratory users. The VPR position was previously held, with distinction, by Professor Maria Zuber, as I detailed in September.
Data Management Services (DMS) helps MIT faculty and researchers manage, store, and share data they produce. DMS can help create data management plans, assess needs of your project, and help to identify solutions. We support researchers who utilize in vitro and in vivo model systems to study processes involved in healthy and diseased cells, tissues, and rodents. We have a broad range of equipment and expertise to work with nanomaterials for the purposes of both characterization and imaging. The Microscopy Core Facility provides experimental consultation, instrument training, and assisted imaging for light microscopes and related data analysis software. Services include light and epifluorescence microscopy, laser scanning and spinning disk confocal microscopy, deconvolution-based microscopy, total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy, super-resolution microscopy, and high-throughput fluorescent slide scanning.
The MIT Nuclear Reactor Laboratory (MIT-NRL) is an interdepartmental center that operates a high performance 6 MW research reactor known as the MITR-II. NRL has an extensive array of facilities for performing neutron and gamma irradiations, for studying neutron physics, and for examining radioactive materials. ORCD operates and provides support and training for a number of cluster computer systems available to all researchers. These systems all run with a Slurm scheduler and most have a web portal for interactive computing.
Research Administration
The Parking & Transportation team develops and manages commuter service programs for MIT’s 27,000+ faculty, students, and staff, and operates the shuttle programs across campus. To fill this key position – so important to the health of MIT’s research enterprise – Provost Cynthia Barnhart and I appointed a search committee of faculty from across the Institute. After conferring with members of the community, the committee advised us that the role, which we had planned to shift to a senior vice provost title reporting to the provost, should remain as a vice president reporting to me. Positioned within the Office of the Vice President for Research, the Chief Research Compliance Officer coordinates the development and implementation of export control and research compliance programs across MIT.

Since then, Maria has also served as my presidential advisor for science and technology policy, and she will continue to do so. I write to share important changes in the leadership of our research enterprise – two steps I believe will advance MIT’s interests in shaping science and technology policy and in helping our faculty achieve their research goals, in part by easing the burden of research administration. A. Griswold Professor of Geophysics, who now serves as MIT’s presidential advisor for science and technology policy. Waitz says he’s eager to dive in and work to identify ways to help MIT’s prolific research engine run more smoothly. Waitz, who is also the Jerome C. Hunsaker Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics, brings deep knowledge of MIT to the position.
Research Computing
Information on U.S. government actions and MIT’s research enterprise is posted on our News & Announcements page. As a result of changes to federal requirements, MIT will now require all “covered individuals” engaged in federally funded research to complete research security training by December 31, 2025. Earlier deadlines apply for NIH, NSF, and DOE proposals, awards, and modifications, and for any other agencies that set training deadlines this fall. We have some MIT-unique systems too, including nanocalorimeters, a positron annihilation spectrometer (PAS), a particle accelerator, and multiple transient grating spectroscopy (TGS) systems.
Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences
His research focuses on developing technological, operational, and policy options to mitigate the environmental impacts of aviation. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, a fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and has worked closely with industry and government throughout his career. The Audit Division evaluates MIT’s academic, research, and administrative processes establishing and managing a service center mit office of the vice president for research and supports the Institute’s efforts to follow good practices, take informed risks, and keep assets safe. We work for the MIT Corporation Risk and Audit Committee and with managers on campus and at Lincoln Laboratory to provide insight, offer recommendations for process improvements, and inform decision-making. CLARITY technology equipment includes a high-content rapid throughput imaging microscope system from Leica Microsystems and Leica supporting software.
